How Will Dental Insurance Coverage Change in 2026

When you’re looking for dental insurance, there are two different styles of dental plans. You’ve got individual plans and group plans. In both cases, there are a couple of important things to keep an eye on: price and network.

The price for individual and group plans can vary depending on how many people are in a family, or how many people are in a group. The number can change that premium. More numbers can sometimes be more advantageous. It just depends on the situation.

The network is the other aspect of a plan that you need to consider:

  • If you’re looking at individual plans and you already have a current dentist, it’s very important to find a plan that includes that dentist.

  • For group policies, there may be a lot of employees to think about. So you want to capture as much bang for the dollar that you have to pay.

So when I am helping someone find a dental plan, I’m consulting primarily in those two areas, price and network.

Choosing a Dental Plan Based on Future Needs

When I do a consultation on dental insurance, I’m also helping an individual look at what they need that dental plan to cover. They might just need basic services or preventative care. That might be all a person cares about. Or will someone need orthodontia? Are there situations where there are a lot of cavities or root canals or maybe implants are needed?

All these different little pieces of a dental plan come into play into our selection because there are different coverages that I’m able to look at for all those different situations. At the end of the day, I am trying to help somebody be happy with their product.

Pay Attention to the Waiting Periods

You want to make sure that if you have a dental plan, you can use it when you need it. When I talk to our clients about dental plans, we talk about waiting periods quite often. I hate having a dental plan and not be able to use it for the first six months if I have a cavity. Or if I have to have an extraction, or if I need a root canal, I have to wait 12 months. So knowing your waiting periods is important.
